Prophet Musa (alayhis-salam) had been living in a place called Madyan for many years. When it was time to leave, he walked with his family on a long journey back to Egypt. It was a very cold and dark night, and they lost their way. Then, Musa (alayhis-salam) saw a fire glowing far away. He told his family to stay where they were while he went to the fire. He hoped that he could either find someone there to show them the correct path, or bring back a burning branch to keep his family warm. He hoped that he could either find someone there to show them the correct path, or bring back a burning branch to keep his family warm. With this hope in his heart, Musa (alayhis-salam) walked toward the fire.

When Musa (alayhis-salam) reached the fire, he noticed something amazing. The fire was burning on a green bush, but the bush was not burning up! As he stood there looking at it, he heard a voice calling out from the right side of the valley. Allah, the Most High, called out to him: "O Musa!" Then Allah said: "Indeed, I am your Lord," Musa (alayhis-salam) stood and listened. Allah was speaking directly to him!

Allah told Musa (alayhis-salam) to remove his sandals, for he was in the blessed valley of Tuwa. Then Allah said: "And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you]." Allah gently taught Musa (alayhis-salam) that He is the only true God, and that there is no one else worthy of worship except Him. Then, Allah commanded Musa (alayhis-salam) to establish the regular prayers to always remember Him.

Next, Allah showed Musa (alayhis-salam) a wonderful miracle. Allah asked Musa (alayhis-salam) what he was holding in his right hand. Musa (alayhis-salam) answered that it was his walking stick. He explained that he leaned on it when he walked, used it to shake down leaves from trees for his sheep to eat, and found it useful for other everyday things too. Then Allah commanded him to drop the stick on the ground. Musa (alayhis-salam) dropped his stick, and instantly, it turned into a living, big snake that started moving very quickly! Musa (alayhis-salam) was so afraid that he turned around and ran away without even looking back. But Allah called out to Musa (alayhis-salam), telling him to come forward and not to be afraid, because he was completely safe. Allah commanded him to pick it up and it would change back into exactly what it was before. Musa (alayhis-salam) reached out and took hold of the snake, and right away, it turned back into his wooden walking stick.

Then Allah showed Musa (alayhis-salam) the second miracle. Allah commanded him to place his hand in the opening of his garment. When Musa (alayhis-salam) did that and pulled his hand out, it was shining as if it were a half moon, yet it was completely healthy and without any sickness or harm. These two miracles were special gifts from Allah. They were clear signs to show everyone that Musa (alayhis-salam) was a true Messenger sent by Allah.

Now, Allah gave him a very important mission. Allah said: "Go to Fir'awn. Indeed, he has transgressed." Fir'awn was the proud king of Egypt. He was very arrogant, claimed to be a god, and treated the Bani Israel- who were Musa’s own people- with oppression. Allah, the Most High, chose Musa (alayhis-salam) to go before this cruel king. He was commanded to invite Fir'awn to worship Allah alone and to let the Children of Israel go free.

Musa (alayhis-salam) knew that speaking to the powerful ruler would be a very hard task. He also remembered that he had trouble speaking clearly. So, he prayed directly to Allah for help: "My Lord, expand my chest for me. And make my task easy for me. And untie the knot from my tongue, so they can understand my speech." Musa (alayhis-salam) wanted the people to understand Allah's message perfectly when he spoke.

Then Musa (alayhis-salam) asked Allah to send his brother Harun (alayhis-salam) with him. Harun (alayhis-salam) spoke more clearly than he did. So, Musa (alayhis-salam) prayed for his brother to support him and share his task. Allah accepted his request and promised to protect them both.

Allah, the Most High, then commanded them to go and told them something important - he told them to use kind and gentle words when speaking to Fir'awn, perhaps he may accept the reminder or fear Allah. Musa and Harun (alayhimas-salam) were afraid that Fir’awn might seize them or punish them. But, Allah told them not to be afraid of Fir’awn. Allah is with them both - all seeing and all hearing. Nothing happens except by His permission, and he is their protector.

Thereafter, Musa and Harun (alayhimas-salam) trusted Allah and began their call. They knew that Fir'awn was an oppressive ruler, but Allah is with them, far greater than everyone and everything.
